Duynefontein: A Site With a Long, Contested History

The government's new-build plans centre on Duynefontein, on the coast adjacent to Koeberg. Environmental authorisation for the site was originally granted in 2017 for up to 4,000 MWe of new pressurised water reactor capacity, but was contested through appeals from Greenpeace Africa, Earthlife Africa and the Southern African Faith Communities' Environment Institute, which argued the process raised affordability, safety and procedural concerns.
